Oar What! Squad

Oar What! is Maroochy River Rowing Club’s junior boys development squad — made up of rowers taking their exciting first steps into competitive rowing.

This squad is designed for young athletes who are building their skills, learning to work as a crew, and discovering the thrill of racing. Training focuses on developing strong technical foundations, building fitness, and fostering a team-first attitude that sets them up for future success in rowing.

Program Structure:

  • On-Water Training: 2–3 sessions per week, focusing on basic technique, rhythm, race starts, and crew skills.

  • Off-Water Training: 1–2 sessions per week, incorporating age-appropriate fitness, strength, and mobility work.

  • Competition Focus: Local regattas, school events, and club mini-regattas to gain valuable race experience.

  • Skill Focus:

    • Fundamentals of sculling and boat handling

    • Crew coordination and timing

    • Learning race strategies and building competitive spirit

Expectations:
Athletes in Oar What! are expected to train consistently, give their best effort, support their teammates, and have fun while developing into strong, capable rowers.

Oar What! is about laying the foundation for a lifelong love of rowing — building strength, skill, friendships, and confidence one stroke at a time.
